Impact of Preventive Chempotherapy on Worm Burden Reduction
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing STH prevalence to 20% and moderate to heavy infections to less than 2% to achieve elimination targets. Endemic countries are working hard to meet these goals through mass administration of albendazole to at-risk populations. In Nigeria, this program has been in place for the past decade, making it crucial to reassess the infection status to adjust or stop the program's frequency. This study analysed stool samples from 2,093 children across three implementing units (IUs). Results showed significant reductions in STH prevalence below 20% in two of the three IUs, with no heavy infections detected in any IU. These findings highlight the substantial impact of PC interventions. However, the study also revealed poor access to adequate WASH facilities, emphasizing the need for improved sanitation and hygiene to prevent infection rebound.
